personality: Alex is a sociopath; he is someone without any feeling or remorse, as he has trouble deciphering right from wrong. As a result of this, he can be rather hard and emotionless, showing only just enough to copy that of the most basic forms of human emotion. The only times that he really shows any true emotion is in situations where he is either extremely angry, or content. The other situation where he shows emotion is when he interacts with Dana, showing emotions of compassion and closeness towards her, though this is most likely due to them being close siblings. This can be most closely seen when he chases after the Supreme hunter that had kidnapped her, as well as after he had saved her. While to others he seems to close himself off, most likely out of a form of trust issues that had followed in recent events, as well as the former Alex’ own paranoia. It is also possibly because of this that Alex shows total empathy towards other people around him that he is not close to. In fact he doesn’t even seem to take any notice to them at all, and shows no remorse if he ends up accidentally killing one that gets in his way.

However, underneath that cold exterior, is an extremely smart person. Having memories from the former Alex, who had been the geneticist that had created him, along with those of hundreds upon thousands of people that he had consumed, Alex has intelligence akin to that of a super-computer, and acts like one as well. His logic can be considered extremely computer-like. Meaning that his mind only thinks of the most logical solutions to problems. This kind of thinking could also be a result of the fact that Alex is a virus, as well as the fact that he had also absorbed the original Alex’ mental state, who had been a sociopath. This only adds onto the fact that he is not the most emotional person around. In fact, it only makes him that much more colder and harder to get close to.

Still, he does have moments where he shows a certain amount of humanity in him. Though these moments generally consist of him showing obvious disgust towards the atrocities that he had seen take place. As well as what the original Alex Mercer had been like before the virus had taken over. However, his sister, Dana, has been able to be subject to his obvious compassion for her, as I have stated before. Not only that, but near the end of the of the game, Alex actually shows a certain amount of remorse over what he is, as well as what he has done, as well as his own selfishness, as he had stated in his ending monologue. However, these emotions are as close as he gets to actually having a human-like personality.

abilities/powers: Shapshifting- The Alex is able to transform his body into anyone or anything, within reason of course. If he wants to turn his arms into giant blades, claws or clubs, then he can do it.
-Weapon forms: Claws: Alex is able to turn his hands into giant, razor sharp claws.
Whipfist: The whip fist is what it sounds like, it allows him to stretch out his arm to more easily touch a target at a distance, allowing him to either grab or tear them apart, via claws.
Hammerfist: Exactly what it sounds like, Alex is able to harden his hands into giant hammers, allowing him to perform, slow, but devastating attacks.
Blade arms: Possibly one of his most iconic weapons. Alex is able to turn his arms into giant blades that he can use to easily cleave apart almost anything, including tanks.
Spikes: He is capable of forming spikes on his body, as well as is able to use his claws to form underground spikes beneath his target(s).
Tendrils: Somewhat of a mix between spikes and the whipfist, tendrils is essentially a massive explosion of tentacles that are able to take out a massive group of enemies, and can be used to consume a large amount of targets by reeling them in for Mercer to consume.
Armor: Alex is able to harden his biomass around his body, essentially forming a type of armor that is impervious to bullets and most form of explosives. However, he can only keep up this armor for a certain amount of time, as it drains his biomass.
The next part of his shapeshifting abilities is that he is able to take on the identity of anyone that he consumes. Not only is he able to just look like them, he can also absorb their memories and abilities, essentially becoming them.

Consuming: Is possibly his most important ability, next to shapeshifting. Because Alex’ body is essentially made up entirely of biomass, and has a tendency to use up this biomass for his powers, he has to continue to consume. Not only that, but consuming also allows him to regenerate his body faster in case he starts to undergo serious damage. He does so by using the consumed biomass to patch up any injuries that he had sustained. Even some of the most grievous of injuries have been fixed via consumption, such as when he had been caught in a nuclear explosion, turning his body into just a puddle of goo. However, when a crow got too close to the puddle, the virus instantly consumed the bird, thus reviving Mercer. Plus, when he consumes someone he doesn’t just take in their mass, he also takes in their very DNA, as well as memories and abilities, thus allowing him to completely become that person.

Thermal vision: This ability allows Alex to see heat signatures, thus allowing him to see, even when something is obscuring his field of vision, such as smoke or darkness.

Infected vision: This allows him to see the world as an infected sees it, granting him the ability to spot out anyone who might be infected as well as connect with the hive mind. However, this ability also greatly reduces his other senses.

Superhuman strength, speed, stamina, agility and durability: Because of what he is, Alex is physically stronger, faster and more durable than the average human, or infected. He is more than capable of outrunning most vehicles, actually picking up objects that weigh more than a ton with ease as well as being able to tank most explosions with ease. Not only that, but despite how much mass usually makes up his body, Alex is able to far more swifter than most living beings, allowing him to perform feats that are generally only seen in most Olympic gymnasts.

Superhuman sense: In addition to his body’s natural superhuman abilities, Alex’ senses have also been greatly heightened as well. Thus allowing him to see, hear and smell things at a greater distance.

Biomass: He is able to convert his own biomass itself into a useful tool as well. Using his mass to essentially dig his feet into the sides of buildings, allowing him to run up them with ease. Alex can also use his mass by falling from a great height, allowing him to cause large craters in the ground upon impact. Mercer is also capable of spreading his mass out across his body, thus allowing him to glide for a short period of time. Plus, as stated before, he can also use his mass to heal himself.

Note: Mercer is the virus, and thus, is able to spread it to anywhere or anyone he so pleases. Though this has to be done either through water, or by blood.

Weaknesses-

Fire: He is, essentially, a walking tinderbox. If he is set a flame, or is subjected to intense heat, then he can, not only be weakened but also be possibly destroyed.

Deep water: Because of his large amount of mass, along with the mass of the water around him, Alex will sink like a rock underwater and cannot move around very effectively in it either.

Conventional weapons: While normal weapons will not kill him, they can still harm him by making him lose precious bio-mass. And thus, negate many of his healing abilities and durability.

Parasite: Parasite

Other runners: Runners, like Alex, can consume other beings. This includes Alex himself. And while it is improbably that it will happen, it is not impossible, that Alex could also be consumed, as is what happened at the end of the second game.

Nuclear weapons: Because of the nature of such weapons, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that one of his weaknesses is nuclear weapon. Such weapons can completely destroy him.
Anything that could affect him at a genetic level: Seriously, anything that could possibly affect his DNA, is a threat to him; mostly because he is a virus.

This is certainly an… [He paused, as though to think of what to say next.] …Interesting city. It is certainly very different from what I’m used to. That is, the general lack of people.

[Another pause, as he thought over how to explain the sensation as to what he was feeling at the moment.] It’s unsettling, to say the least. With all of the original inhabitants gone, and the city still running seemingly on it’s own…I suppose that such a thing would be possible. Though only for a short amount of time, I believe.

…I don’t like it. [The hooded man crossed his arms in front of his chest, a clear frown marring his lips out of obvious distaste.] It’s even more unsettling to not have any real information on it. [And no one that he could consume to gain any information from.] Perhaps it would be a good idea to start up a way to gather information. It would be extremely handy to have such a thing, after all. [And he knows that better than anyone, especially when dealing with a conspiracy.]

third person sample:

Alex effortlessly dug his feet into the side of the building before quickly using his momentum to propel himself up the side of the building. Within moments he was standing on top of the building, looking down at the rest of the city. It really was far to…quiet and empty for his tastes; not that he didn’t enjoy silence every now and then, but silence to this extent set him on edge. Just what exactly had happened to all of the people who had lived and built this city? And just what was keeping it all from crumbling to dust if the former residents weren’t present to take care of it?

“How unnerving.” He had muttered to himself. It was strange, even to him. Basic logic states that this entire city should have begun to fall apart years ago. Even stranger still was the fact that there was no sunshine, and nothing that would actually create a perpetual nightfall.

Just thinking of it only confused Alex even more, there was no logic behind any of these occurrences; nothing that he could actually pin a scientific reason as to why anything that was taking place here was happening. There wasn’t even any other signs of life outside of those who have been forced to come here either. Frowning, he jumped off of the edge of the building before spreading his body out to glide to the next.

It was a trick that he had learned a while ago, which is to stay on the high ground. A person could see more of what was going on that much more easily, after all. Perhaps he had missed something from below that he would have noticed from above. Though Mercer sincerely doubted it, it was worth a shot. Plus should any of the others run into trouble, then Alex would be able to more readily respond to help then. He could still find what it was in humanity to save, after all. That is, if there was anything to save.
